Dunster Village Cricket Club

We entertained West Somerset Teachers on Thursday 27 May on another pleasant evening and after winning the toss elected to bat. We got off to a very strong start with all the first three batsmen all retiring at 30 (Jason Cobbett, Steve Murray & Chris Blazey) and supported by Ashleigh Bishop (24 no) amassed 159 for 2 in our 20 overs – a record for a 20 over innings thus far this season!

Setting such a high target was always a big ask for the visitors and with some very tidy bowling including Jack Boyle with 2 for 5 and sharp fielding it was even more difficult. The visitors did keep up with the required run rate until about the 14th over but lost wickets at a steady rate and finally were all out for 128 in the 18th Over – James 48, McTavish 26.

Next up on Saturday 5 June were Old Salops, a touring side from Shropshire comprised of old school friends, who started touring last year for the first time and hope to do so annually from now on. In a slight variation from normal rules, we played 22 overs and had up to 3 overs per bowler. Batting first again we were in good form and thanks to good knocks from Ashleigh Bishop (37 no), Ricky Lewis (32 no) and Jason Cobbett (28) posted a good total of 151 for 9 in our 22 overs.

The visitors entered into the chase in fine style and were always there or thereabouts. Some good bowling especially from Stuart Ford (3 for 17), Steve Murray (2 for 12) and John Melbourne (2 for 11) kept them under pressure. A single off the last ball of the innings tied the scores at 151 each but with the visitors all out by dint of a run out, Dunster won the game on fewer wickets lost.

We next travelled to Watchet for a 40 over game on the next day Sunday 6th June and weary from our previous day’s exertions were unable to match the home side’s efforts. Choosing to bat first, we scored 118 all out in the 30th over and without contributions from James Webber (44), Chris Blazey (34) and Rob Ware (17) we would have made an even lower amount. Good bowling from the hosts included 4 for 25 for Dave Milton and 3 for 11 for Martin Strong.

This total was always a little light for a 40 overs match and Watchet reached 120 for 3 in the 19th over thanks to S Brodey (53 no retired) and R Strong (30). Pick of our bowlers was James Webber with 2 for 18 from 5 overs.

We then travelled to Porlock on Thursday 10 June on a night more like winter than summer with light a big problem for everyone. The hosts wisely chose to bat first and made 118 for 6 in their 20 over (Ian Buchannan 58; N Limb 25). Whilst we bowled quite well (Rob Ware 2 for 13 being the pick), we were not able to take wickets and they accumulated their runs evenly throughout.

Replying we lost our wickets too easily and were all out on the last ball for 86. James Webber (40) and Ashleigh Bishop (18) were the only batsmen to make double figures. Of the home side bowlers, J Clegg took a remarkable 6 for 6 to see off any hope of our winning through at the end.

Sunday 13 June saw us entertain Watchet in a return 40 over game looking for revenge for our defeat at Watchet a week earlier. Winning the toss, we put Watchet in and learned to regret that choice as they amassed 283 for 8 in their 40 overs with Mark Bishop scoring 104 and Martin Ketch 99 in that impressive total. Of the bowling skipper, Craig Bishop took 3 for 27, Andy Fay 2 for 18 and James Webber 2 for 48.

In reply, a fighting 57 from Chris Blazey supported by Olly Armitage (13) set us up but then wickets fell at regular intervals and no one else reached double figures and we were all out for 99 in the 30th over. It seems like our game is better suited to the shorter version of the game and we have not yet mastered the 40 over strategy of staying in for all the overs!
