Exmoor and Somerset Film Locations Print E-mail
Dunster and Exmoor have been used many times over the years as a film location.  Dunster is an ideal film location for a variety of productions though the architecture and landscape often lend themselves to period or historic film.  With the nearby West Somerset Steam Railway this is especially the case.

Dunster was most notable used as a film location in the Hercule Poirot series.   Dunster was more recently used as a location for the rural drama Down to Earth.

Exmoor is often used as a film location with the Land Girls, Tess of the D`Ubervilles recently being filmed on location in Dulverton.  Dunster castle was also used during the 1995-6 production on the Famous Five.

The nearby West Somerset Railway has often been used as a film location on Exmoor with notable examples including:

  • A Hard Day's Night - 1964
    Allies at War - 2002
Miss Marple: The Mirror Cracked - 1992
Poirot: The Cornish Mystery - 1989
The House of Elliot - 1991 to 93
    The Land Girls - 1997
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - 1988

Exmoor was also a Somerset film location for the medieval village reconstructed for Tony Robinson`s childrens comedy Maid Marion and her Merry men.

Many of the businesses in the area have come to understand the accommodation requirements of film crews when on location including the unusual hours worked and storage for valuable and bulky equipment.  The area also offers diverse accommodation requirements from the best 5 star quality to good value accommodation for crew members.

The Latest Dunster in Film Location

Dunster was recently home to a 70 man crew filming the latest advert for the Tesco's affordable elegance range.  The film was created locally using the diversity of landscapes from open moorland, arable farmland and wooded valleys on Grabbist.
