Exmoor is.... Print E-mail
Exmoor is our youngest and smallest National Park.Created in 1954, it is 265 square miles in area, or 170,000 acres. It is mostly farmed, 25% being moorland and 10% being woodland.
Two thirds of Exmoor National Park is in Somerset, and one third in Devon. The highest point is Dunkery Beacon, at 1705 feet.

Exmoor Is  …..
Frosty nights and misty mornings,
Fresh green beech leaves in the spring
Purple, heather-covered moorland,
Valleys deep where rivers sing.

Random patchwork quilts of colour
Golden yellow, green and brown.
Busy farmstead, homely cottage,
Sleepy village, bustling town.

Red deer, dignified and stately,
Proud, erect against the sky.
Hounds, with scarlet coated huntsmen.
Guards, protectors, standing by.

Snow which clothes the world in silence,
Rain that clings to hair and brow.
Curve-horned sheep with kind, wise faces,
Docile, calm red-ruby cow.

Bluebell woods, rough-coated ponies,
Village shows and country rides.
Exmoor is, to me, forever,
All of these and more besides.
